Dear Art Lover,

This Saturday, in the interest of sharing the work that I love to buy, I introduce my friend and brilliant painter and printmaker Maxwell Forrest Roath.  Max and I met in Santa Fe in the Ryder Studio, Tony and Celeste Ryder’s school for the deep study of representational drawing and painting, following the intensive atelier model - 6 hours / day 5 days / week of painting!

In that intensive environment, our work improved, and a deep friendship formed, rooted in shared study and shared relaxation at the end of the day.

I own a bunch of Max’s work at this point, and I love it all.  He is a graduate of the Tamarind Institute, the world’s leading lithography training program graduate school, which in and of itself is saying something.  What he described of that process was more intensive than my grad school experience at the Harvard Design School, an institution known (at the time) for its brutal long hours and stressfully performative schedule.  Think 14-hour days… most days.

Out of that training, Max has been gaining huge traction with showing and selling work across a multitude of fields and subject matter - being invited to juried plein air competitions, solo shows, painting massive portraits, intricate still-lifes and commissioned work… all the while relentlessly practicing his drawing skills, keeping them razor-sharp.  It seems every time we catch up on the phone (which is often), he is mid-drawing, and I can hear the graphite on the other end scraping away to create beautiful images on paper.
