Dear Art Lover, In a few weeks, I’ll be traveling to San Diego to attend the reception for the San Diego Watercolor Society Plein Air show, juried by watercolor artist Jospeh Zbukvic, likely the most well-known, accomplished, and respected plein air watercolor painter alive. I entered the show with the hopes of getting my work in front of him, to see what he thought of it. I am grateful to have one painting accepted, “Lakeside Crew at Kenmore’s Log Boom Park” (above), watercolor, gouache, and gansai watercolor, 22 x 30”, 2023. This painting did not come about simply through luck and inspiration - it was part of my ongoing work for the Lakeside School Magazine. For my involvement, I am forever in debt to Editor Jim Collins and Art Director Carol Nakagawa, who sought me out as someone who could create original commissioned artwork (not illustration) to be included in the magazine, following events related to the school. As a Lakeside Alum, I welcomed the opportunity. For last spring’s issue, Jim’s idea was to spotlight the Lakeside Crew, the Rowing Teams, of which I am also an alum. I hadn’t done any “rowing-specific” artwork for years (the 2019 Windermere Cup Poster seems something from another lifetime), and I was unsure even how I would go about making magazine-quality work from such a dynamic subject. At the grace of the Lakeside Crew coaching staff, I was allowed to ride along in the motorboat launch for a practice, making plein air sketches from the boat, trying not to let them fly away or get too wet in the rush of the wind and spray. It was a first for me - to paint rowing, on the water, from the water.
