Here are Gary’s words about the work, transcribed from a video of him presenting the award:

“David’s really risen through the Gage ranks.  He was taking classes here as a teenager, as a young adult, and a young man.  He was also a rower, can you see the scull and the boat swinging in the lower right hand corner there?  Very cool.  He studied with a long long list of people… I love the title… I don’t know how he did it at that scale, in watercolor, on the spot!  Christine Gedye is a landscape painter, she’s on our board, she’s at Fountainhead Gallery on Queen Anne, she’s shaking her head, because I know, we can’t even imagine (how he did it).  Tony Ryder is one of his instructors, and there’s a long long list of people (David has) studied with here.  David is a force of nature, and apparently, he’s going to be teaching here pretty soon, so watch out for him in our catalog.”
