Dear Art Lover,

This morning, a message from yesterday evening: It is the end of a day of art, art business, and gorgeous bluebird weather in Seattle.  I’m sharing what progress I made of a view from the park on Portage Bay, Fritz Hedges Waterway Park, looking Southwest towards 520 and Capitol Hill.  This painting likely isn’t quite finished, but it’s a decent start. Because of a tight schedule today, I only had twenty minutes to paint between commitments.  I even considered not retrieving my watercolor bags from the car, and doing some kind of sketch later on.  I am glad I did not put off the work, but painted the clouds over the hill, fascinating in their aspect.

Since last summer, I made a hard commitment to make some kind of art every weekday, M-F, with no exceptions other than travel or other equivalent scheduling.  I have not missed a single day.  This doesn’t mean that each weekday is filled all day long with carefree painting - I wish! - rather, it means some kind of art making, every day.  This could be even a 2’ sketch from imagination, a portrait of a friend, or on the best days, long-format plein air or studio work.  My thesis is that something, some kind of art, is better than zero.  I wanted to avoid having dry spells, time where I make little to nothing for days, weeks, even months, and this commitment seemed to match my goals and personality.

This work in progress is one of several I am currently working on.  When I get to paint, or draw, even for a few minutes, the whole day is a victory.
