PORTRAITURE

Dear Art Lover,

At a friend’s Holiday Party the other evening, a guest asked me what part of my art practice was I currently most interested in, most looking forward to.

Although I’ve been diligently practicing plein air watercolor landscape for the last two years and counting (and will always continue to do so), the aspect of my own practice most intriguing to me is portraiture, specifically, the practice of drawing or painting someone (or a non-human animal) from life, and getting to know them by spending that time and space with them.

This time and space doesn’t have to be formal, but it can be.  It can be a long-format, many session full-length portrait painting, but it can also be a stranger at a restaurant or on a train.  It can be a friend, unposed, going about their business, it can be my dog, it can be pelicans on the ocean shore.  Here are a few recent sketches of such subjects, all done in graphite (pencil) on paper.
