3.21.24 - Thursday

Dear Art Lover,

Here is some of the work from yesterday’s session in the studio with the live model at Gage.  I look forward to attending the Gage Collector’s Gala this Saturday.  It felt right to return to the open studios, to drawing and painting the figure this week of all weeks. Thank you to the other attendees for saying hello and asking questions about this work “Figure Study, From Below, 3.20.24”. It was painted from life, in watercolor, over a graphite underdrawing. I spent about 3 hours (with breaks) working on it. It is watercolor, not oil.

“I’ve never seen a watercolor figure painted at that scale” a friend of mine at Gage said to me - neither have I - but this is the kind of work I’ve been dreaming about making, large-scale figure work from life. This piece is 22 x 30 inches. I look forward to making larger work in the coming sessions with the figure.

It’s thrilling to be able to work from the model in studio at one time of day, and to be outside painting en plein air in another.  Here is another excerpt from my recent application to a plein air painting opportunity, this time the prompt:

How would participating in the (*artisti opportunity*) benefit your artistic development?

“More than anything, I am looking to grow my community of fellow artists, especially artists who are similarly fascinated by plein air landscape painting.  There is no shortage of subject and natural beauty out of doors in Seattle, WA, but there are not very many other artists pursuing their work in a professional capacity.  I welcome the opportunity to make connections with other artists and with people who are appreciative of artistic intensive study of the real world.”
