To San Diego… and beyond!

Dear Art Lover,

Today I travel to San Diego for the San Diego Watercolor Society’s Plein Air (outside, from life painting) Exhibition and Awards Reception.  When I planned this trip it was mostly to find an excuse to bathe in warmer weather, and to catch up with an old friend and fellow creative from high school who thought the novelty of a plein air watercolor show alone would be the only ingredient necessary for a good time together.  Little did I know that the juror (master watercolor painter) Joseph Zbukvic would award my painting in the show the first place prize, which makes this trip that much more of a special excursion.

I look forward very much to meeting the membership and leadership of the SDWS, and to seeing the other artists’ work.  It is hard to find fellow plein air painters, but I am always recruiting to the team of people who are willing to pack their supplies out-of-doors and squint into the sun.  Typically the win of the process isn’t the painting itself, but the simpler joy of being outside while getting to participate in an activity I love, which in this case is making artwork.  Building communities around the joy of a shared passion is worth traveling to make happen.
