Sharks and Jacks
Sharks and Jacks
Original Animal Drawing “Sharks and Jacks”, ink on paper, 8 x 12”, 2021
These sharks and jacks were drawn from life at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Sharks were my first love in drawing - I drew them obsessively as a child. Re-visiting sharks as subject matter as an adult massages a certain part of my brain that will always be ready to draw a shark. The gestures of the jacks in the same tank were fascinating, too, the large predatory fish grown likely beyond the size they might in the wild - uncredited - their bodies a bit distorted with age. Each shark shown here is the amalgamation of many times viewing those sharks, observed seconds at a time, a few lines drawn, then onto another part of the drawing, or just waiting until the specimen returned to swim its familiar laps, over and over and over. It is difficult for me to have more fun with my time than the fun I have sketching sharks and other aquatic species from life.
