Original Watercolor Painting, “Plein Air, 11:30am -12:45pm - view in the rain from shelter at Golden Gardens, trash can, pole, bench, blackbird, 10.2.23”, watercolor, 22 x 30”, 2023
As long as the temperature is above freezing, there is nothing wrong with painting in the rain, or other conditions not usually weathered for “en plein air” painting, outside, from life. I worked under a shelter at Golden Gardens to make this, drawn to the framing of the scene by the single blackbird on the ubiquitous gray public trash can. I didn’t necessarily mean to tilt the horizon line - I use no graphite underdrawing, just paint to paper. The appearance of a yacht at full bore charging across the Sound left the faintest of white wakes at this distance. While the scene might seem contrived, it is exactly as I observed it.
