88. Original Plein Air Watercolor, “Plein Air, La Jolla Cove, 12-1pm, 8.15-16.24”, Watercolor, 30 x 42”, 2024
Location: La Jolla, CA
This painting was begun the same day I began the three-day painting of pelicans I came to San Diego to make. I’d been joined for the start of that painting (“Plein Air, Pelicans at La Jolla, 10-noon, 8.15-17.24”) by a fellow artist who also was working in watercolor that day, but I believe he had to take off before I started this piece. Although technically a two-day painting, most of everything you can see was made in thirty minutes on the first day, a gorgeous clear-sky August day, peak tourist season, kayaks out, pelicans out, sea lions, swimmers, the whole gambit. I loved the monolithic aspect of the La Jolla packed earth cliff, and the rainbow of color in the shallow waters’ reflections below.
