I was still getting my bearings when I made this piece, the first plein air watercolor of Art Tour 2024, made at about 8000’ on the side of Humphrey’s Peak in Flagstaff, on a very colorful but colder-than-expected evening. The sun was setting outside my airbnb, a parked trailer high up on the mountainside. In the low mid-ground you can see snow, still, even though it’s May in the desert, and in the snow on the peak at right, you can see a strange pattern in the paint - that striation is from the watercolor being frozen from below as I worked - the board flat on the deck of the tiny camper, the temperature dropping in the evening.
