4.  Original Plein Air Drawing, “Portrait of Max in Profile, 5.30.24”, ink, 9 x 12”, 2024

Location: Denver, CO

For this portrait of my good friend and artist Maxwell Forrest Roath, I wanted to focus on his likeness and features.In two previous works from this same trip to Denver, I’d drawn him painting in his environment, back turned to me, as well as him working on his laptop, both showing the full figure. In this profile sketch, I wanted to go a bit into detail, in particular on his hair and contour, the outline around his features. We joked about it after and during - “Max, I only paint you now…”. The Denver trip was a highlight of Art Tour 2024, coming just after Event #1, ArtX in Flagstaff, and yielded my favorite work of the whole tour - these simple but emotionally rewarding portraits of my best friend and an outstanding artist going about his normal daily life.
