Original Watercolor Painting, “Plein Air, Heron Studies, 11:30am-noon, 9.28.23, West end of Locks”, watercolor, 11 x 15”, 2023
This watercolor painting of a Blue Heron was made from life, observing this bird just outside the Ballard Locks in Seattle. I wasn’t sure why I wandered to where I did to search for subjects or views to paint, but when I came to the edge of where I could go at the Locks, this Heron was waiting for me on the other side of a fence. It watched me closely for thirty minutes before taking flight - a sketch of the bird with outstretched wings is in the upper right. I felt so lucky as I’d been trying for months to find a Heron to paint from life.
