Study for “Plein Air, Eastlake in the rain”
Original Watercolor Painting, “Study for “Plein Air, Eastlake in the rain””, watercolor, 11 x 15”, 2023
This small study was preparatory for a larger watercolor painting of the same subject. Sometimes, if necessary, I’ll make a study painting while working on a larger piece, to test out color, to see how my process and ideas will work as a smaller rough draft before moving forward on the larger work. With watercolor, it helps to mix the paint just as you mean to, the first time, and it can also be tricky to predict what that exact hue will be when dry as opposed to wet. Oil paint is more straightforward - and presents as it is and always will be - while watercolor can change significantly or not at all from wet to dry. Hence, smaller works like this one can be useful. Here is the finished piece: https://davidosmithartist.com/store-2/plein-air-eastlake-in-the-rain-from-the-shelter-at-gasworks-1030-12-noon-92723
