Location: La Jolla, CA

For the last of the pelican sketches I chose a more land-bound specimen, who was more or less still as I worked, and surrounded by many others in a near-identical position. The flaps in the lower jaw are surprising - they whip in the wind, and the pelicans are moving them around constantly, shaking them out, stretching them, etc. It would be impossible to overstate my fascination for drawing and painting these birds.
