I got lucky to happen to see “Gary”, as some neighbors told me he is locally named, cleaning his feathers on some floating logs at the water’s edge on my home street in Eastlake. I didn’t have my sketchbook on me when I first spotted him through the trees (a cautionary tale for always having it), so I raced home to grab it, hoping he’d still be around when I came back. As luck would have it, he lingered for a full hour of feather-cleaning. You can see him with a semi-unfurled wing in the lower right, picking at his feathers.
