This is the second of three sketchbook pages’ worth of work of drawing “Gary”, a great blue heron, while he cleaned his feathers for an hour. On this page I focused extensively on the gestures of his head and neck, including him bundled and stepping forward slowly in the way herons do (top middle image), twisting his head to peck at his own back (middle left image), and not ignoring the inner feathers of his right wing (lower right image).
