Location: Edmonds, WA
This sketch of a ferry docked in Edmonds had to be made very quickly. It doesn’t take too long for the ferries of Washington to unload and load their human and vehicle passengers. The ferries are iconic, an integral part of the lore of living on or around Puget Sound, but I’d never actually drawn one from life before. At most they’d made minor background appearances on the horizon of my plein air watercolor seascapes. For this drawing, I was as interested in the forms of the ferry itself as I was in the large lumber piers that secrue its docked position. The experience of making this drawing was great - I would definitely seek out a ferry terminal again (this one was just an after-dinner circumstantial coincidence) to draw and paint these unique boats.
