David, After Michelangelo
David, After Michelangelo
Original Mastercopy Drawing, “David, After Michelangelo”, charcoal on paper, 8 1/2 x 11”, 2022
I can remember clearly seeing Michelangelo’s David in Florence for the first time. Before seeing the work in person, I hadn’t really “got It” why everyone always lost their heads over how great it was. In this case, for this work, the scale of it, seeing the sheer mass, in person, was an integral part of the art. My small drawing, a mastercopy, shows the David from a less-seen angle, behind. Michelangelo took care to intimately render every inch of the form, not just the familiar front-facing view. I loved studying the back muscles and the way the sash frames them.
