Profiles of an Old and a Young Man, After Leonardo
Original Mastercopy Drawing, “Profiles of an Old and a Young Man, After Leonardo”, red pencil on toned paper, 8 1/2 x 11”, 2021
Without trying to be 100% faithful to the original, this is my version of a drawing my Leonardo Da Vinci, two profiles, of an old man and a young man. Drawings like this one are known as “mastercopies”, works made by studying and more or less copying the work of another artist, to go through the motions of re-creating their work. It is an academic exercise, but one that I always have enjoyed, especially in the unforeseen ways that my version will inevitably bear my own idiosyncrasies. This drawing was made as part of a large series of mastercopy work I completed in Fall of 2021.
