Original Mastercopy Drawing, “Désmasquée, After Gallen-Kallela”, graphite, 8 1/2 x 11”, 2021

This drawing is a copy of a very sultry figure painting by artist Gallen-Kallela of a model taking a break between formal poses.  She smokes on a couch, with an expression between boredom, practicality, amusement and fatigue.  I enjoyed the original painting enough to try to sketch in graphite what interested me about it.  A work like this is an academic exercise I’ll sometimes try for fun, a “mastercopy”, working from another artist’s work to learn and improve one’s own.  This was part of a larger series of mastercopies I completed Fall 2021.
