Giuliano De Medici, After Michelangelo
Giuliano De Medici, After Michelangelo
Original Mastercopy Drawing, “Giuliano De Medici, After Michelangelo”, charcoal on cream paper, 8 1/2 x 11”, 2022
I made this piece after a longer break from drawing the human figure, in any sense, from life or from mastercopy. This drawing was made from Michelangelo’s sculpture of Giuliano De Medici, and it was far more challenging than I expected to render (especially in a small scale of 8 1/2 x 11”) the complexity and richness of the original sculpture. At the time I made this, I had drawn this sculpture before, but it was a partial study, and a much easier view. There is no smudging or smearing here - only hatching - the fine lines of charcoal going back and forth like a seismograph, to render the form of the sculpture. This drawing was made as part of no larger project, just a standalone piece for my own enjoyment and learning.
