Original Mastercopy Drawing, “The Victory, After Michelangelo”, graphite, 8 1/2 x 11”, 2021

This sketch of the upper figure of Michelangelo’s “The Victory” was made as fast as possible, to render the energy and vivacity of the original sculpture in soft dark graphite.  I wanted to draw the optical light and dark of the three-dimensional piece.  A “mastercopy” is one artist’s work made after the work of another, to learn, to understand.  This mastercopy was part of a large series of mastercopies completed Fall 2021.
