Original Plein Air Drawing, “Plein Air, Greenlake, ~3-4pm, 9.25.21, Saturday”, acrylic paint marker, colored pencil, graphite on gray paper, 8 1/2 x 11”, 2021
This piece is one of my more successful and sentimental plein air drawings (plein air meaning outside, from life, not from photos), a process where I combine media often on toned paper to create a drawing in an optical style, drawing the color of the light I see. I had just returned from six months of optical oil painting study in Santa Fe, and this scene was one of many I made with newfound enthusiasm for the city I’m from (Seattle) and in a method that’s fairly idiosyncratic to my work.
